During this term, students will learn about desktop publishing. Most students will be accustomed to Microsoft Publisher, which is part of the Microsoft Office suite of products. This term students can access SCRIBUS, which is a freeware program, this means it can be downloaded for free. You can access by conducting a search on Google and should be able to download it on CNET. For the first few weeks students will setup a single poster and fill it with text about a famous Australian. In addition to Scribus an Image Editor is another program where pictures can be changed before inserting the image on a poster. Another free program which is available is GIMP2.6. Students will use both programs to create their own poster and a 3-fold brochure.
For the first you will setup your poster.
1. Start the program and change the default unit from point (pt) to millimetres (mm). The top, bottom, left and right margins should adjust automatically.
*Click on F2 to access the PROPERTIES dialogue box.
2. Go to VIEW and click on SHOW GRID.
3. Insert 3 text boxes, use "T" key to quickly access the text box facility.
4. Link the text boxes together using the LINK TEXT FRAME button. You need to click on the box you want to from, click on the LINK TEXT FRAME button and then select the box you want to link to.
5. Insert SAMPLE TEXT to see how the text will flow from one box to another.
6. Place a heading inside the text box, click on the STORY EDITOR button.
